About Sutherland Timber

Family owned and operated

Sutherland Timber has been 100 years in the business of milling timber.
Initially established in 1920, as a sawmill in Southland, the operation found its way to Kaiapoi in the 1950s to be closer to the Lyttelton port and Christchurch city.

In the mid-1980s Murray (Muz) and Anne (Annie) Sutherland took over management of the company, and have set a platform for the company to retain its core family values.

In 2017 Murray Sutherland was humbled to be made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to the timber industry and the community.

Our processing plant includes a drying kiln, treatment plant and planer mill and process around 80 cubic metres of Radiata Pine and Douglas Fir each day. Radiata Pine accounts for about 70% and Douglas Fir about 30%, and roughly 25-30% of what we mill is exported. Sutherland Timber are proud to employ over 30 staff.
